The View From Here Robert Strausberg Title In
this Editor’s Choice on Cancer Therapeutics we highlight new tools, technologies
and clinical approaches that provide an exciting new path for drug development.
Evidence is now clear that molecularly targeted therapies have the potential
to work exceedingly well. However, there is still a learning curve for how
to select targets, develop compounds and target them to cancers, and build
a clinical environment that can foster rapid emergence of new intervention
strategies.
The suggested references have been selected to provide a flavor of paradigm-shifting approaches towards defining new targets for the development of a pharmacy of specifically targeted compounds that deliver the best treatment for each patient based on their specific disease. These examples include (i) comprehensive molecular and functional analysis of somatic mutations, epigenetic variation, and microRNAs; (ii) emerging intervention strategies for targeted delivery; and (iii) approaches to facilitate the interface of basic and clinical research to expeditiously advance progress in patient care.
