The View From Here Adriaan A. Lammertsma In vivo imaging in drug development The value of in vivo imaging studies in drug development has long been recognised, but only in recent years it seems to become incorporated on a more routine basis. This is perhaps best illustrated by pharmaceutical industries starting their own imaging laboratories or seeking alliances with academic imaging centres.
Clearly there are a number of imaging techniques that can be applied to a number of different questions regarding drug development. Does the drug get to the target? Does it have the expected functional effect? What is the optimal dose and what is the optimal dosing regimen? This issue of E-choice provides an overview of the various possibilities, but also of the challenge to come to generally accepted guidelines for performing drug development imaging studies.
