Gene expression: changing the drug discovery paradigm

Gene expression profiling has revolutionized how drug targets and biomarkers are discovered and validated. Moreover, this approach is currently being exploited to elucidate the mechanism of action and specificity of compounds. There is promise that gene expression profiling will change the mainstream drug-discovery process. For this to become reality, it is important to develop gene expression profiling tools that increase the reliability, sensitivity and accuracy of multiplexed gene-expression measurement. Moreover, is important to change the focus from reporter gene and single gene assays to direct, multiplexed measurement of gene expression levels of native cells and tissues.

This issue of Editor's Choice highlights different aspects of gene expression profiling and the application of this approach to therapeutic fields as far-ranging as cancer, neuroscience, metabolic disorder and infectious diseases.
