The lead story in this issue of Drug Discovery Today is by Hugo Almeida, Maria Helena Amaral, Paulo Lobão and José Manuel Sousa Lobo, entitled:  “In situ gelling systems: a strategy to improve the bioavailability of ophthalmic pharmaceutical formulations”. The article makes the case that using biodegradable and biocompatible polymers in colloidal carrier systems has proved to be the most effective strategy for delivery, producing an exponential increase of the bioavailability of ophthalmic drugs.
