In this review, De Ceuninck et al. highlight the difficulties associated with osteoarthritis diagnosis and discuss the most recent research efforts and successes for the identification of reliable osteoarthritis biomarkers.

De Ceuninck et al. address the question of why osteoarthritis biomarkers are so important, with special emphasis on the following: the criteria that a biomarker candidate should fulfill for validation in osteoarthritis prognosis and diagnosis; identification hurdles; and recent research studies giving reasons for hope.
