Laboratory equipment supplier Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS) has announced the keynote speakers that visitors to the SLS Show and Conference will enjoy at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham, on May 22. Robin Ince, Dr Helen Czerski and Dr Adam Rutherford will each give presentations in the main lecture hall. Drawing on their deep scientific knowledge and passion for making science accessible, they will encourage delegates to Meet, Learn, Discover, in accordance with the show’s theme, amidst demonstrations from industry giants and superb networking opportunities.
Lecturer, podcaster, radio and TV presenter, writer, film consultant: Dr Adam Rutherford has extensive experience in engaging audiences, both public and academic. Perhaps best known for his popular audio series, The Curious Case of Rutherford and Fry, and hosting the BBC’s Inside Science for eight years, Dr Rutherford is one of the biggest names in British science communication. His talk, at 2.00pm, is titled All Science is Political, All Data is Biased.
Dr Helen Czerski is a physicist turned oceanographer, author and presenter who has intrigued audiences through multiple podcasts, radio shows and BBC science documentaries. Humanity’s relationship to the oceans fascinates her. Dr Czerski is adept at exciting this fascination in others, as she will in her presentation Blue Machine – the ocean engine that shapes our world at 11.30am at the SLS Show and Conference.
Robin Ince is a comedian, author and populariser of scientific ideas in the mainstream. A fellow of the British Science Association and holder of multiple honorary titles from academic institutions, Ince will bring his rich expertise in mixing science and comedy to entertain delegates at the show. His 10.20am talk, The Importance of Being Interested - Adventures in Scientific Curiosity, will challenge the perception that scientific disciplines are distant and difficult.
“This roster of speakers is the strongest we’ve had in the show’s history,” said David Zaborowski, group marketing manager at SLS. “There’s something for every discipline and communication style. Of course, our theme of sustainability underpins everything, as we know it’s a huge priority for our customers and industry partners.
“As well as the chance to Meet, Learn, Discover, we want the show to be the place to celebrate the scientific community. The environment will be positive and inspiring. Our attendees will go home feeling like they belong to a strong community, working together towards a bright future for British laboratory science.”
As well as the keynote speakers, institutions such as the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Science and Technology will give talks, and major companies such as Eppendorf, Corning and Ohaus will host seminars on industry trends. The show is an opportunity to explore the latest products, technologies and sustainable solutions across the laboratory sector.
